Questions we get asked in Werribee
Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
A licensed electrician can, and in Victoria it has to be one. A wall charger is fixed wiring on its own circuit, so it goes in through a registered electrical contractor and gets tested to AS/NZS 3000. It isn’t a DIY job.
Does my switchboard need upgrading?
Not always. If it has safety switches, spare room and no damage, it can stay. We look first and say so. We don’t sell boards to people who don’t need one.
Can I install downlights myself?
Only the plug-in kind, into a ceiling socket that’s already there. Anything that needs new wiring has to be done by a licensed electrician.
Does a 1970s house need rewiring in Australia?
Not always the whole house. A 1970s house is usually wired in PVC cable that’s still sound, unlike the rubber cable in houses from before the 1960s. It didn’t have to be built with safety switches, though, so the board needs checking too. It may only need the old parts replaced, and we’ll tell you which.
Do you need an electrician to install a smoke alarm?
For a mains-powered alarm, yes. It’s wired into your electrical circuit, so it has to be installed by a licensed electrician. A battery alarm you can fit yourself.
Is it illegal not to have a safety switch?
Not in an older home you own and live in. Any new wiring has to be protected by one, and rented homes in Victoria have to have safety switches on the power and lighting circuits.
What counts as an electrical emergency?
Anything burning, sparking or smoking. Water into a board or a light fitting. A safety switch that won’t stay on. Half the house dead when the street is fine.
Do you take small jobs, like one shop or office?
Yes. We do small factories, workshops, shops and offices. If a job’s too big for us, we’ll say so up front.
