What the rules say for your house
In Victoria, a house built after 1 August 1997 needs mains-powered smoke alarms with a battery backup. An older house can use battery alarms, but wired ones are the better choice when they’re being replaced anyway.
If you’re keeping battery alarms, the ten-year lithium kind is the one to get, because the battery lasts as long as the alarm.

Interconnected alarms all sound together, so you hear the one at the far end of the house.
No ceiling access
In a two-storey house, or anywhere we can’t get above the ceiling, wireless interconnection links the alarms without opening it up.
Battery backup
Wired alarms still carry a backup battery, so they keep working in a blackout.
Where each alarm goes
You need an alarm on every storey, and one between each bedroom area and the rest of the house, in the hallway to the bedrooms if there is one.
On a ceiling, it should sit at least 30 cm from the wall. On a wall, it should sit at least 30 cm down from the ceiling, clear of the dead air in the corner.
Victoria’s fire services also recommend an alarm in every bedroom and living area. That matters most if anyone sleeps with the door shut.

When an alarm starts chirping
A single high-pitched beep every 30 seconds or so is nearly always a flat backup battery. It often starts at night, because the battery loses power as the house cools down.
If an alarm is past the expiry date on the back, replace the alarm, not just the battery.
Dust in the sensor can affect how well an alarm works, so run the vacuum over each one now and then.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need an electrician to install a smoke alarm?
For a mains-powered alarm, yes. It’s wired into your electrical circuit, so it has to be installed by a licensed electrician. A battery alarm you can fit yourself.
How much does smoke alarm installation cost?
It depends on how many alarms you need, whether they’re wired or battery, and whether they’re being linked together. We can price it once we know the house.
How often do smoke alarms need replacing?
They carry an expiry date, usually ten years from manufacture. After that the sensor isn’t reliable, even if the test button still beeps.
Do the alarms have to be interconnected?
In a house built or largely renovated after May 2014, yes: the alarms must be hard-wired and interconnected. In an older house it can be required when an extension adds bedrooms, and Victoria’s building regulator says alarms should be linked anyway.
How often should I test my smoke alarms?
Once a month: press the test button until the alarm sounds. If it takes a 9-volt battery, change the battery every year as well.
Are smoke alarms compulsory in Victoria?
Yes. Every home has to have them, and it’s the owner’s job to put working alarms in. An owner who doesn’t meet the smoke alarm rules in the Building Regulations 2018 can be fined.
What do I do with an old smoke alarm?
Put it in your normal household rubbish, in one piece. Some alarms hold a tiny amount of radioactive material that’s safe inside the alarm, so the CFA says not to open or break them before they go out.
