Exhaust fans and gas heaters
An exhaust fan that’s wired in needs a licensed electrician too, whether it’s a new fan or a replacement.
If the house has an open-flued gas heater, a bathroom exhaust fan can lower the air pressure inside and pull carbon monoxide back into the room.
Open-flued heaters take their air from the room and send the fumes out through a flue. If you’re not sure which kind you have, the maker or a qualified gasfitter can tell you.
Gasfitters test for this when they install or service a heater, so if a new fan is going in, have the heater checked too.

Where a bathroom fan vents to
An exhaust fan that vents into the roof space moves the condensation off your ceiling and into the insulation, where you won’t see what it’s doing.
Ducted out to a wall vent or a roof cowl, the moisture leaves the house instead.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules for installing a ceiling fan?
The blades have to sit at least 2.1 metres above the floor. The fan is fixed to the ceiling frame, not the plasterboard, and anywhere it can get wet, like an alfresco, it has to be a fan rated for outdoor use. On a low ceiling, a fan that mounts close to it can still clear 2.1 metres.
Can I install a ceiling fan myself?
No. Energy Safe Victoria says electrical work isn’t a DIY job, even one as small as changing a light switch, and doing it unqualified is illegal.
Why does my fan wobble?
Loose blade screws, blades out of balance, or the mounting. If it’s screwed to plasterboard instead of timber, it keeps getting worse.
Can you install a fan with a light?
Yes. Most fans with a light run off one point, with the fan and the light on separate switches or a remote.
Can a fan go on a raked ceiling?
Most can, with the right drop rod for the angle. What matters is the blade height above the floor at the low end. We measure it on the visit rather than guessing from the box.
How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan?
It depends on whether there’s already a light point where the fan is going. We can’t put a figure on it until we’ve seen the room and the ceiling.
