Signs a house needs rewiring
If your house still has rubber-insulated cable, it should be replaced. It was used in houses built before the 1960s, and the rubber goes brittle and cracks with age.
Other signs are power points or switches that feel warm, lights that flicker when something else turns on, fuses that keep blowing, and a board with no safety switches.
If you’re buying a house built before the 1980s, have the wiring checked by a registered electrical contractor or a licensed inspector before you move in.
Old wiring that has worn out, or can’t cope with modern appliances, is behind many electrical fires in homes.

Some houses need everything pulled out. Others only need the old runs replaced and the rest left alone.
Wall and roof access
Timber frame with a roof space is straightforward. Solid walls, concrete or a flat roof take more work.
The board
A rewire can take in the switchboard too, and we’ll tell you if yours needs work.
Testing and certificate
The whole installation is tested and certified at the end.
Safety switch and smoke alarm rules in a renovation
In Victoria, a renovation with significant electrical work has needed safety switches on the power circuits since 1991, and on the lighting circuits since 2001.
The 2018 wiring rules go further: a new circuit for a cooktop, hot water system or air conditioner needs a safety switch as well.
If an extension adds bedrooms that need new smoke alarms, your building surveyor may require the whole smoke alarm system to be interconnected, old alarms included, as part of the permit.

When we need to be on site during a renovation
The wiring has to go in while the walls are open, before the plasterer, and the fittings go on after the painter. Miss that window and somebody is cutting into new plaster.
So we work to the drawings and to the stage. Tell us when the frame is up and when the plasterer is booked, and we fit around both.
If the renovation adds big new appliances, the supply into the house may need upgrading too. Powercor puts most of those upgrades at 3 to 8 weeks, so it’s worth raising early.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 1970s house need rewiring in Australia?
Not always the whole house. A 1970s house is usually wired in PVC cable that’s still sound, unlike the rubber cable in houses from before the 1960s. It didn’t have to be built with safety switches, though, so the board needs checking too. It may only need the old parts replaced, and we’ll tell you which.
How much does it cost to rewire a house?
It depends on the size of the house, how much of the old cable has to come out, and how easy the walls and roof space are to get into. We can price it once we’ve seen it.
Do I need to rewire for a renovation?
Not the whole house. The rooms you’re renovating get new circuits, and we check the rest of the wiring and the board can take the extra load.
Can I stay in the house during a rewire?
Usually yes for a partial rewire, with power off in sections. A full rewire is harder to live in and we’ll say so up front.
Can you work from the plans before the reno starts?
Yes. Send us the drawings and we’ll mark the points from them.
What happens to the old wiring?
The parts we replace come out. Anything left in a wall gets disconnected at both ends, so nobody finds a live cable in ten years’ time and has to guess.
Can I upgrade my switchboard without rewiring my house?
Yes. The switchboard and the wiring in the walls are separate, so a new switchboard doesn’t mean a rewire. If testing turns up a problem in the old wiring, we tell you what we found.
