What a spa needs before it goes in
Smaller plug-in spas can run from a dedicated outlet, and bigger ones are wired in. The manual says which, so check it before the concrete goes down.

What changes the job
The size of the heater
A bigger spa or sauna heater needs a heavier circuit. The largest may need three phase.
The distance
How far the spa or sauna sits from the switchboard, and whether the cable goes underground.
Room on the board
A new circuit needs a spare space on the switchboard. A full board or an old fuse board may need work first.
The outdoor gear
The isolator and anything else near the spa has to be rated for water and weather.
Spa safety around the water
Energy Safe Victoria warns that a shock near a pool is more likely to kill than one anywhere else, because bare feet, wet skin and less clothing lower the body’s resistance.
So keep phones on chargers, radios and any other plug-in gear where it can’t be splashed or fall in.
Press the TEST button on the spa’s safety switch every three months. If it doesn’t trip, get it looked at before anyone gets in.

Wiring a sauna
A traditional sauna heater draws a lot of power, so it gets its own circuit sized for the heater. The heater’s manual sets what that is.
Inside the cabin we use heat-rated cable, because normal house cable can’t take the heat.
Infrared saunas usually draw less, and smaller ones can run from a dedicated power point. We can check the rating before you buy one.
Frequently asked questions
Can an electrician fix a hot tub?
Yes, the power side: the circuit, the isolator, and a safety switch that keeps tripping. A fault in the spa itself, like the heater, a pump or the controller, is a job for a spa technician.
Can a hot tub plug into a normal power point?
Only if the manual allows it. Some plug-in tubs need a 15 amp outlet, which we can put in.
Do you need council approval for a spa?
A spa deeper than 30 centimetres has to be registered with your council, and its barrier checked. Installing one usually needs a building permit too. The electrical work gets its own Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Do you install the spa itself?
No, just the electrical side. The spa, its plumbing and the base it sits on are for your spa installer, and we work in with them.
How much does it cost to connect a spa or sauna?
It depends on the heater, how far it is from the switchboard and what the board has spare. We can price it once we’ve seen the spot and the manual.
