The licence rules for garden lights
Anything wired into the mains needs a licensed electrician, and that includes a new outdoor power point. The work gets a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Anything outside has to be rated for the weather, and any new or changed circuit goes on a safety switch.
Before a trench goes in, the pipes and cables already underground have to be found.

12 volt, 240 volt and solar lights
12 volt lights run from a transformer near where they start. A plug-in kit you can fit yourself, but a transformer that’s wired in is a job for a licensed electrician. The lights are easy to move later.
240 volt lights are wired into the mains. They suit bigger fittings and lights further from the house, and moving one means new wiring.
Solar lights charge a battery from a small panel, so they don’t connect to your wiring at all. They suit path lights and fairy lights in spots that get sun, and they’re the easiest to move.

Sensor flood lights for driveways and paths
We mount them high and clear of trees, so moving branches don’t set them off.
How far they see and how long they stay on can be set to suit the spot.
By the front and back doors, a sensor or a timer means the light comes on when it’s needed. Not every sensor or timer suits every globe, so it’s worth checking the pair works together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace an outside light myself?
Not if it’s wired in. Swapping a wired light is electrical work, and Energy Safe Victoria is clear that isn’t a DIY job, however small.
Can you connect lights I’ve already bought?
Yes, as long as they’re rated for outdoor use. Have the boxes handy when we come out and we’ll check them.
Can you add lights to an established garden?
Yes. We plan the cable route to disturb as little of the garden as we can, and walk you through it before any digging.
Can garden lights be controlled from my phone?
Smart lights can, but they need a reliable WiFi signal where they are, and most use a little power on standby even when they look switched off.
How much does it cost to install garden lights?
It depends on how many lights you want, how far the cable has to run and how you want them switched. We can price it once we’ve walked the garden.
