When Starlink needs an installer
Once the dish needs to go up high, it has to clear trees and roof lines, be fixed so it doesn’t move in the wind, and the cable has to come inside without letting water in.
That’s the part we do: the ladder work, the drilling and the sealing.
Starlink itself recommends a permanent mount up high, on a roof, pole or wall, for the best performance and to protect the cable.

Finding the spot for the dish
Starlink’s app has a Check for Obstructions tool for finding the spot with the best service. Starlink says a tree branch, a pole or part of the roof in the way will cause dropouts.
The cable sets the other limit. In the Standard kit it runs 15 metres from the dish to the router, so the dish has to sit within reach of where the router will live.
Once the dish is up, the app shows whether it needs turning to face the right way.

Roof, wall and pole mounts
A roof mount usually gets the clearest view. On a two-storey house, a wall mount up near the eaves can do the same job with less roof work.
A pole in the yard can work where the roof is shaded, as long as it’s solid, because a dish that sways loses signal.
We look at all three on the visit and tell you which suits your place.
Starlink sells a mount for each of these. Its cable isn’t rated to be buried, which matters for a pole out in the yard.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to drill a hole in my house for Starlink?
Usually one, where the cable comes inside. Sometimes it can come in through an opening that’s already there, and we look for that first. Starlink sells a cable routing kit made for passing the cable through a wall.
Can you install Starlink by yourself?
Yes, if the dish can sit on the ground with a clear view. Starlink is built for self-installation, and the Standard kit comes with a kickstand. For a roof, wall or pole mount, Starlink’s help pages suggest a roofing or installation professional if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.
Will drilling the roof cause a leak?
Not if it’s done properly. Water runs off the flashing instead of in.
Do I need a power point near the router?
Yes. The router plugs into an ordinary power point, and the Standard kit’s power cable is 1.5 metres long. If there isn’t a point where you want the router, we can add a power point while we’re there.
Can you move my Starlink dish?
Yes. If trees have grown into the view or you’re getting dropouts, we can move the dish to a clearer spot and run the cable again.
Can the Starlink cable be extended?
Not by joining another cable to it. Starlink says that can affect the service, and a third-party cable can let water into the dish. Longer Starlink cables are sold in its shop.
Where should the Starlink router go?
In a central spot in the house, Starlink says, for the best performance. For a bigger house, it sells a mesh router to spread the coverage, and the dish cable runs to wherever the router ends up.
How much does Starlink installation cost?
It depends on where the dish has to go and how far the cable has to run to the router. We can price it once we’ve seen the roof and the house.
