Signs your switchboard needs upgrading
The clearest sign is ceramic fuses: white porcelain holders with fuse wire inside, instead of switches. If nothing on it has a TEST or T button, nothing on it cuts the power if someone gets a shock.
The other time it comes up is when you add something big. An EV charger, a split system or a renovation each needs a new circuit, and an old or full board may have nowhere to put one.
A board that feels warm, smells of burning or has scorch marks around a fuse or breaker needs looking at straight away. Turn the main switch off and ring us. If you can see smoke or flames, get everyone out and ring 000.

What a switchboard upgrade involves
Safety switches
RCDs and RCBOs are what most people call safety switches. They cut the power fast enough to stop a shock seriously hurting someone.
Circuit breakers
They replace the old fuses. When a circuit overloads, you flick it back on instead of rewiring a fuse.
Room for new circuits
Spare spaces on the board, so a new circuit can go on later without another upgrade.
Labelling
Every circuit written up for what it actually runs, so you know which switch does what.
Upgrading the supply from the street
Sometimes the supply coming into the house needs upgrading as well as the board. Powercor lists renovations, EV chargers and bigger air conditioners among the common reasons.
That includes going from single to three phase. Only a registered electrical contractor can apply to Powercor for it, and Powercor says most of these jobs take 3 to 8 weeks.
If you’re going all-electric and an EV charger is in your plans, the Victorian Government says it may be worth upgrading the board and the supply at the same time.

The certificate you get
Board work gets tested, and a Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued for it. It’s the legal record of the work and who did it, and it’s yours to keep.
Replacing a main switchboard is prescribed work, so an independent Licensed Electrical Inspector has to check it as well. We organise that inspection.
Swapping one breaker or safety switch for an equivalent one in the same spot isn’t prescribed, so it doesn’t need the inspector. We’ll tell you on the visit which way your job goes.

Does my switchboard need upgrading?
Not always. If it has safety switches, spare room and no damage, it can stay. We look first and say so. We don’t sell boards to people who don’t need one.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?
It depends on your board and what it needs, so we can’t put a figure on it until we’ve seen it.
What’s the difference between a fuse and a safety switch?
A fuse protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects the person.
Can you upgrade the board without rewiring the house?
Yes. The board and the wiring are separate. If we find something in the wiring while we’re testing, we tell you, but a board upgrade doesn’t mean a rewire.
What is an RCBO?
It’s a safety switch and a circuit breaker in one unit, on one circuit. It means a fault on your kitchen circuit trips only the kitchen, instead of taking out half the house like an older shared safety switch does.
Can I upgrade my switchboard myself?
No. A switchboard has to be changed by a licensed electrician, and Energy Safe Victoria says doing your own electrical work is illegal as well as dangerous.
Can safety switches be added to my old board?
Yes, if there’s room on it and it’s in good condition. One safety switch can cover up to three circuits, or each circuit can have its own RCBO. A full or damaged board may need work first.
