What your switchboard needs for a charger
A charger needs a circuit of its own, so the switchboard needs a spare space for it, a safety switch to protect it, and a main switch that can carry the extra load.
An older board, one still on ceramic fuses, or one that’s already full may need work first. If the house already uses most of its power supply, the supply may need upgrading too.
We check all of that on the visit and tell you what the job needs.

One written price for fitting the charger: the cabling, the board work and the testing. If we find a real problem once we start, we stop and agree it with you first.

The charger goes in, gets tested, and we show you it working before we leave.
What changes the job
The cable run
A board in the garage a few metres from the car is a short run. A board on the far side of the house is a longer one.
Where it’s mounted
Garage, carport or an outside wall. Outside, the charger and its isolator need to be rated for the weather.
The certificate
A charger circuit is electrical installation work, so you get a Certificate of Electrical Safety for it, the legal record of what was installed.
Room to grow
We can run a heavier cable now, so a bigger charger can go on later without pulling it all out again.
Three phase chargers
Most houses in Victoria are on single phase power.
A 22kW charger needs three phase, and Powercor puts it at 50 to 120 km of range an hour. But the car has to be able to take that much, and most EVs sold in Australia charge at no more than 11kW from a wall charger.
If you don’t have three phase, Powercor has to change your supply, and only a registered electrical contractor can apply for that. A switchboard upgrade can make sense at the same time.

Wall chargers and dedicated outlets
If your car came with a charging lead, it plugs into an ordinary power point. It works, but Powercor puts it at 10 to 15 km of range an hour, and it’s a long, heavy load on a circuit the rest of the house uses.
A dedicated 15 or 32 amp outlet for the car’s own lead can be a smaller job than a wall charger. The Victorian Government says charging on 15 amps is about 50% faster than on a standard 10 amp point.
A 7kW wall charger runs on single phase and adds about 30 to 40 km of range an hour, by Powercor’s figures.
Frequently asked questions
Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
A licensed electrician can, and in Victoria it has to be one. A wall charger is fixed wiring on its own circuit, so it goes in through a registered electrical contractor and gets tested to AS/NZS 3000. It isn’t a DIY job.
How much does it cost to install an EV charger?
It depends on the charger and what your switchboard and power supply need, so we can’t put a figure on it until we’ve seen it.
Will you fit a charger I’ve already bought?
Yes, as long as it suits your supply. Have the model details handy when we look at the job, and we’ll tell you what the circuit and the switchboard need for it.
Can the charger run off my solar?
A smart charger can be set to charge from your solar panels during the day, or to wait for a cheaper overnight rate if your plan has one. Tell us what you’ve got and we’ll check the charger you’re looking at can do it.
How long does an install take?
One visit, unless the switchboard needs work first. We tell you when we quote whether that makes it two.
Is a normal power point enough to charge an EV?
For a lot of drivers, yes. The average Victorian drives about 38 km a day, and the Victorian Government says a standard power point meets most people’s daily travel needs.
I’m renting. Can I get a charger put in?
Only with your rental provider’s OK. A dedicated outlet or a wall charger is a change to their property, so talk to them before it goes in.
