How to check for safety switches
Open the switchboard and look for switches with a TEST or T button. Those are your safety switches. Each one has 30mA printed on it, and some are labelled ‘safety switch’. If there aren’t any, nothing on the board will cut the power in a shock.
Test each one every three months. Tell everyone in the house first, press TEST, and check the lights and power points on that circuit have gone off. Then lift the switch back up.
If the power doesn’t go off, the switch may have failed. Energy Safe Victoria says to get a licensed electrician to look at it straight away.

What fitting a safety switch involves
Every new safety switch gets tested before we sign off the job. Since November 2021, the wiring rules have required each one to be tested, to show it’s been put in right and actually trips.
You then get a Certificate of Electrical Safety, a legal document recording the work. Fitting safety switches doesn’t need an inspector. That’s for bigger jobs like replacing the main switchboard.

RCDs and RCBOs
An RCD is a safety switch that protects several circuits at once. If one of them has a fault, all of them go off.
An RCBO does the same job for one circuit only, so a fault in the kitchen trips the kitchen and leaves the rest of the house on.
Either one meets the wiring rules, as long as no safety switch covers more than three circuits. We can show you which suits your board on the visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is it illegal not to have a safety switch?
Not in an older home you own and live in. Any new wiring has to be protected by one, and rented homes in Victoria have to have safety switches on the power and lighting circuits.
How much does it cost to install a safety switch?
It depends on your switchboard. If there’s room, a safety switch can go straight in. If the board is old or full, it may need work first. We can price it once we’ve seen the board.
Does every circuit need one?
In new wiring, yes. The 2018 wiring rules require a safety switch on every circuit in a home, even the cooktop, hot water and air con. Homes built from 1991 needed them on the power points, and from 2001 on the lights too, so an older board can have circuits with none. We check which of yours are covered.
I rent out a property. Is this the same check?
No. Victoria’s rental rules have their own check, at least every two years, and that’s a different job with its own paperwork.
Will the power be off the whole time?
No. It goes off in short stretches while we test at the board, and back on in between. We tell you before each one so nothing you’re running gets caught out.
Can I install a safety switch myself?
No. It’s work inside your switchboard, so it needs a licensed electrician. Doing it yourself is illegal in Victoria, and a safety switch fitted wrongly can fail to trip.
