Before you ring
If the power goes off
If one circuit is off and a safety switch on the board has flipped, unplug whatever was running on it, then reset the switch. If half the house is off or the lights have gone dim, leave the board alone and ring Powercor on 13 24 12 first.
If it holds, the thing you unplugged is the problem, and that’s a smaller job. If it trips again straight away, leave it off.
If the whole house is off, switch appliances off at the wall so nothing starts a fire when the power returns.
If you can smell burning, don’t reset anything. Turn the main switch off and ring us. If there’s water in or near the board, don’t touch it. Keep everyone away and ring us. If there’s smoke or flames, get everyone out and ring 000.

Street outages and fallen powerlines
Powercor owns the poles and wires across Wyndham, and getting the power back on after an outage is up to them. Their faults and emergencies line is 13 24 12, and their website has a live outage map.
If the whole street is out, that’s a network fault, so Powercor is who to ring. We’ll tell you the same if you ring us first.
Stay at least 8 to 10 metres from a fallen or broken powerline and report it to Powercor. If anyone’s life is in danger, ring 000.

Tracking down a fault
Some faults are one bad fitting. Others are in a cable inside a wall and take longer to find. You hear what we’re finding as we go.
If Powercor has cut your power because of a fault on your side, like a damaged switchboard or a loose cable where the line meets the house, it may not reconnect you until the repair is done. A licensed electrician fixes it, sends Powercor a Certificate of Electrical Safety and books the reconnection.
Please don’t try to fix it yourself in the meantime. It’s unsafe, and in Victoria it’s illegal.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as an electrical emergency?
Anything burning, sparking or smoking. Water into a board or a light fitting. A safety switch that won’t stay on. Half the house dead when the street is fine.
Do you do after-hours callouts?
No. We work weekdays, 8am to 6pm, and we’ll still answer the phone on a weekend and book you in. If something’s dangerous before then, keep everyone away from it. If there’s smoke or flames, get everyone out and ring 000.
The safety switch keeps tripping. What is it?
Usually one appliance with moisture or a failing element in it. Once you’ve found it, stop using it until it’s been checked.
Half the house is off, or the lights have gone dim. Is that the network?
It can be. Don’t touch the board or anything metal. Switch off and unplug what you easily can. Ring Powercor first, because one phase of the supply from the street may be down. If it’s not theirs, ring us.
I got a tingle from a tap. What should I do?
Ring Powercor straight away, even for a small tingle. Energy Safe Victoria says a tingle or shock from a tap or an appliance should be reported to the electricity company at once, and a licensed electrician must then check the wiring.
Can I plug a generator into the house in a blackout?
Not into a power point or the switchboard. That can put Powercor’s line workers and your neighbours at risk. Plug appliances into the generator itself with heavy-duty outdoor leads, and never run it inside or in the garage.
