Who does what on a split system install
A split system install has two parts. The refrigeration side is the pipework and the gas between the indoor and outdoor units. The electrical side is everything that brings power to the unit, from your switchboard out.
We do the electrical side. If you’ve already got an air con installer booked, we work in with them.

Whether the board has room for a new circuit is the first thing we look at.
You get a fixed price
One written price for the electrical side.

Tested and labelled at the board, with the unit connected once it’s up.
What the electrical side involves
The isolator
A weatherproof switch beside the outdoor unit, with a way to lock it off so the unit is safe to work on during a service.
Board work
If there’s no spare room on the board, it needs sorting before the circuit can go in, which can mean a switchboard upgrade.
Safety switch
The new circuit goes on a safety switch of a type that suits inverter air conditioners.
Certificate of Electrical Safety
You get one for the wiring. Air con work is non-prescribed, so it doesn’t need a separate inspection.
Sizing the circuit for your split system
The installation manual for your model sets what the circuit has to be. Depending on the unit, it can call for a circuit of its own, a set breaker rating and a minimum cable size.
The breaker is matched to the most current the unit can draw. The cable is sized for that current and for the length of the run, so the voltage doesn’t drop too far along the way.
So when you book, send us the model numbers of the indoor and outdoor units. Wiring that doesn’t follow the manual can also put the unit’s warranty at risk.

A circuit of its own
A split system draws a solid load and draws it for hours. Share a circuit with something else and you find out about it on the first hot day.
When an old unit is replaced, the old circuit can only stay if it suits what the new unit’s manual asks for. A bigger unit can need a heavier cable or a different breaker.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a split system myself?
No. In Victoria, handling the refrigerant needs an ARCtick licence and the pipework needs a plumbing registration, on top of the licensed electrician who connects it to power.
I bought the unit myself. Can you wire it in?
Yes, as long as the circuit suits what its manual asks for.
Can you run the circuit before the unit arrives?
Yes, and it’s the tidiest way to do it. The power’s ready and waiting, and we connect the unit once it’s up.
Can one circuit run two split systems?
Only if both units’ manuals allow it. With a multi-head system, one outdoor unit runs several indoor heads, so it’s the outdoor unit’s manual that sets what the circuit needs.
Why does my split system trip the safety switch?
It can be current leaking from the unit or its wiring, or a safety switch that doesn’t suit an inverter unit. The fix is finding the cause, never taking the safety switch out. Ring us and we’ll track it down.
How much does the electrical side cost?
It depends on how far the unit is from the switchboard and whether the board has room for another circuit. The unit and the pipework are priced by whoever installs them.
